What diligence means with AI
Diligence is using AI responsibly. It covers three commitments: using it ethically, being transparent about when and how you used it, and taking responsibility for whatever you produce with it. It is the fourth of the 4 D's, and the one that makes the other three trustworthy.
The core idea is simple: AI is a tool, and the person using the tool is accountable for the result. “The AI wrote it” is never an excuse for something false, unfair or harmful that you chose to share.
A real example
A student uses AI to help brainstorm ideas for a history project, then writes it themselves. Diligence is adding a single honest line at the end, “I used AI to brainstorm possible topics”, before anyone has to ask. It is also checking the facts in the final version, not typing classmates' names or personal details into a chatbot, and following the teacher's rule for that assignment.
Why it matters for kids
Diligence is what separates getting help from handing the work over, and it is what keeps a student safe when school rules about AI are unclear or changing. A student who discloses openly has nothing to hide, and one who takes responsibility for checking their work is much less likely to be caught out by an AI mistake.
It is also the habit most likely to follow them into adult life. Every workplace using AI is working out the same questions of honesty and accountability that students are practising now.

Deciding which jobs go to AI, which stay human, and which are a team-up. It is the first of the 4 D's.

Communicating clearly with AI — the second of the 4 D's. It covers what you want, how you want it made, and how good it has to be.

Judging whether an AI output is actually any good — accurate, useful, and well reasoned. The third of the 4 D's.
- D4Diligence
