Prompting

Prompt

What you type to an AI. Your exact words change what comes back.

In practice

"Act as a zookeeper and describe red pandas in 4 bullets."

What a prompt is

A prompt is whatever you type or say to an AI tool to tell it what you want. A question to a chatbot is a prompt. So is a description given to an image generator, or the instructions given to an AI that writes code.

The AI does not know what you meant. It only has your words, so it fills every gap you leave with its most likely guess. That is why two people asking about the same thing can get very different results.

What makes a good prompt

Compare “tell me about red pandas” with “Act as a zookeeper and describe red pandas for a 10-year-old in 4 bullet points.” The second one says who the AI should be, who the answer is for and what shape it should take. The AI has far fewer gaps to guess at, so the answer is far closer to what was wanted.

Most good prompts include some of the same things: the task, the background the AI cannot know, who the result is for, and the format. Being specific matters more than being long.

A prompt is a first draft

Experienced AI users rarely get what they want from the first prompt. They read the result, notice what is missing or wrong, and adjust the prompt. That loop of asking, reviewing and refining is the actual skill, and it is learnable.

Why prompting matters for kids

Prompting is really a thinking and writing skill. To write a clear prompt a child has to know what they want, explain it precisely and judge whether the result meets the goal. Those are the same skills good schoolwork asks for, which is why prompting is taught early in the AI Explorers course rather than treated as a trick.

Where students meet it

Prompt is taught in Lesson 2, Your Words Are the Superpower, part of the Prompting unit of the AI Explorers course for kids. Kai is the guide for that lesson, and it is one of 8 terms in the unit.
